AICAR (5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is a cell-permeable nucleotide analogue that activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) — the master cellular energy sensor responsible for switching cells from anabolic to catabolic metabolism. AMPK activation by AICAR has been shown in preclinical models to increase fat oxidation, improve insulin sensitivity, enhance mitochondrial biogenesis, and increase exercise endurance independent of physical training — leading to its characterisation as an "exercise mimetic."
